Procurement

Thinking, planning, and dealing based on values

Procurement management is a global and sustainable orientation, sourcing materials and services from suppliers, subcontractors, and other providers in a rule-bound, resource-efficient, and cost-effective fashion is integral to our corporate philosophy. In this manner – and by drawing upon a professional procurement network – our Procurement is able to make a significant contribution to our company’s overall success. Quality assurance, responsible decision making, and cost savings all play a decisive role in maintaining the profitability and competitive strength of Bilfinger over the long term.

From paperclips to giant factories

Our respective Procurement department is involved in Bilfinger's overall Procurement process as well as in all of the individual sourcing and purchasing transactions. The volume procured in this context accounts for almost half of our Group’s total output performance. This means that a key success factor, in our view, is to consistently implement a sustainable procurement strategy as part of our overall corporate strategy, with carefully defined policies regarding suppliers, quality assurance, and contract structuring. At the same time, all procurement activities are performed in close coordination with the respective technical departments and requisitioning entities, such as Compliance, Calculation, Project Management, Sustainability Management, etc.

Compliance management in Procurement

Companies that work together with many different suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers and that operate on all procurement markets have to deal with a multitude of regulations and challenges – as well as with increasing complexity – when it comes to their supplier management. In order to deal effectively with the potential risks that can arise along the value-added chain, our Procurement department works hand in hand with our Compliance department and with this close coordination we can identify such risks ahead of time and to mitigate them in a consistent manner.

This ensures strict adherence to the Compliance guidelines that have been put in place for Procurement is one of our top priorities. After all, our business dealings with suppliers may give rise to any number of liability-related risks. These must be identified early on, and need to be counteracted through appropriate measures, so as to prevent financial and/or reputational damage to Bilfinger. Accordingly, it is essential that we carefully vet our chain of suppliers. Only then can we be sure to avoid possible problems, such as ambiguous contractual agreements, unethical conduct or violations of the law (e.g. against anti-trust statutes).

Transparency is key

The need to operate on global procurement markets makes it all the more critical that the activities pursued by our Procurement department in this area be based on transparent processes. Therefore, we not only rely on our Compliance management system, but also set great store by adhering to all the currently applicable guidelines and policies with respect to procurement, integrity, and dealings with third parties. This is how we minimise potential risks while ensuring our procurement is as efficient as possible.
