Apprentice Profile

Matthew Tyrer, Panel Wireman/Technician (Fully qualified)

  • Level 2 & 3 BTEC Electrical Engineering
  • HNC Electrical Engineering
  • BEng (Hons) Industrial Engineering Degree

Why Bilfinger?

I chose Bilfinger UK as they are a well-known reputable company, who are industry leaders within the engineering industry. I had also heard that they support the growth of their apprentices by providing invaluable industry experience along with the qualifications needed to attain the career I aspired to achieve.

Daily Tasks/Projects:

  • I am currently working on a project involving aspects of interpreting wiring schematics, panel wiring and panel fitting to build soft start motor panels. This project consists of 4 variable speed drive panels and 12 pump connector panels which vary in size.
  • Alongside my practical work on site I am also completing my degree assignments, exams and working on a project for the site. The project involves making a mobile test rig to reduce the need to transport panels from the build cells to the test area. The current method can be time consuming and result in a loss in production time, therefore the idea is to instead move the required test supplies to the panel which in turn will help improve efficiency on site.

Key Achievements:

  • Completing my BTEC and HNC in Electrical Engineering qualifications.
  • Completing my apprenticeship which helped me gain expertise in my chosen career path.
  • Attaining a job in my chosen field of expertise at Bilfinger UK.
  • Completing further study of a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Future Career Path:

Once I’ve finished my degree I would like to move into a career in the engineering department with the hope of becoming a project engineer. Possibly after that I would aim to study a Masters in Electrical Engineering and then I could look into becoming a chartered engineer.
