Apprentice Profile

Alexander McNair, Electrical & Instrument Apprentice (1st year)

Disciplines:

  • Control & Electrical
  • EAL SVQ2 Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF level 5
  • HNC Measurement and Control Engineering

Why Bilfinger?

While at high school I was given the opportunity to spend a day with Bilfinger UK in Grangemouth, which involved me working in the design office for a period of time. This experience influenced my decision to progress into a career in engineering. Meanwhile studying to gain the qualifications required to achieve this goal, I was fortunate enough to be offered the chance to complete further study of a HNC in Electrical Engineering during my final years at high school. So when the opportunity arose to start an apprenticeship with Bilfinger UK I jumped at the chance as I knew the excellent training and opportunity to gain further qualifications that they provided from my previous work experience placement with them.

Daily Tasks/Projects:

  • During my college hours I have a great deal of tasks to complete as part of my SVQ qualification which involves me dealing with many different types of equipment such as valves, motors, heat exchangers and various types of instrumentation.
  • Two days of my week are focused on working towards my HNC qualification in measurement and control engineering, with this there are various units to complete such as measurement and control class from which I have learned the theory behind many different types of instrumentation which I could apply to my job role.

Key Achievements:

  • Working towards attaining my HNC in Measurement and Control Engineering in a year, which is usually completed over 2 years instead.
  • Achieving my Electrical Engineering HNC whilst still at high school.
  • Starting my apprenticeship with Bilfinger UK is my proudest moment to date.

Future Career Path:

After completing my HNC and my EAL SVQ2 this year I’ll be moving on to site to work alongside the Bilfinger UK Construction team where I will continue my studies at college on a day release basis. After completing my apprenticeship I hope to continue working for Bilfinger UK and to also study a degree in the electrical/instrumentation field at university on a part time basis to help achieve my goal of becoming a fully qualified engineer in the future.
